Tips on how to create a WOW flyer for your next letterbox drop.

I’ve been creating flyers for letterbox drops for over 20 years. Some of the flyers that arrive in my own letterbox or through our doors at Bayside Letterbox Deliveries AMAZE me: some completely WOW me and others I would have absolutely NO INTEREST in reading whatsoever.

I’ve created basic bullet point suggestions on how to create standout “I want to read you and then (if applicable to me) employ you” letters and flyers. If you are about to embark on designing your own flyer I highly suggest you read this blog in its entirety (OR you can utilise my 20 years of experience and contract me to create a WOW flyer for you, just saying!). Or if you’re time poor (TL;DR), read the points in bold below to get the gist.

  • Create a standout HEADLINE. Right at the top, make an unforgettable impact. No one really cares about your logo…unless you’re McDonalds, Nike or trying to impress your mum.
  • Make your flyer memorable and DIFFERENT. Use powerful words. Some of the words or phrases I like to use are Easy, The secret to, Finally, How to, Free bonuses, Now you can, Discover…and there are plenty more.
  • Consider REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY call to action phrases. Phrases like ‘No thanks, I love being exhausted’, ‘No thanks, I’ll figure it out myself’, ‘I don’t want to know the latest trends’, or ‘I don’t want to grow my business’ can be very impactful.
  • Use colourful, eye catching PHOTOS. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. One large photo will be more eye catching than many smaller photos. A stunning photo grabs attention, creates a mood, and supports your story. This image is your “focal point” and will draw readers in. You can purchase inexpensive but quality stock photos on the internet OR just use your phone to take before and after photos that are equally attention grabbing.

More time to read? I’ve expanded on my suggestions to create a WOW flyer below.

  • Talk about the features and benefits of your product or services. Your prospects will ask the question, “What’s in it for me?” Write from their perspective using the words “you” and “your”, and avoid using “we”, “us”, “I” and “our”.
  • Be sure to keep your text short and to the point. Some of the most powerful words to use are “free”, “save”, “love”, “new”, “results” and “guarantee”.
  • Break up long paragraphs with bullet points and place them in separate boxes. Organise your page with boxes, borders and areas of contrasting colours.
  • Use compelling testimonials and case studies. Nothing strikes a chord like an endorsement from a happy customer, especially if it demonstrates the results they’ve had with your product or service. Be sure to include the first and last name, company name and location of the person providing the endorsement.
  • You don’t need to fill your flyer with wall-to-wall text and graphics. Incorporate some white space to make certain elements stand out and to make the flyer easy to read.
  • Make your points easily identifiable. Highlight titles and subtitles in bold and avoid using ALL CAPS because they are difficult to read.
  • Don’t forget to proofread, and to have someone else proofread your work. Check your contact information. Dial the phone numbers on your flyer to make sure they are correct, type the URL of your website into a search bar to make sure it’s correct too.
  • Offer a discount or special limited-time price.
  • Design a coupon on the bottom quarter of the flyer. Be sure to clearly state the deadlines and limitations of the offer. If it’s a mail-in coupon, be sure to include the payment specifications with areas for filling out credit card information, a mailing address, etc.

These simple, but effective, tips can be the difference between a successful flyer advertising campaign and a complete waste of money.
